Kuumba Fest Live Tweet!

Image
This last Saturday I went to the ONU Kuumba Fest, and live-tweeted the event! The Kuumba Fest was an event held by the Black Student Union in the Bear Cave. It was a super fun and inclusive event that expressed creativity through fashion and music. There was trivia and history shared all night long. All of the talent throughout the night was done by ONU students as well which made the event a lot cooler and more personal. If you want to follow the event in closer detail to know what went on that night, check out the live twitter thread I did throughout the show! I used the hashtags #SMSpring19 (and #SMSpring2019), and well as #ONUKuumbaFest!  twitter.com/itsdaniellelol

What Social Media Brand Are You?

Image
Creating your personal brand is so important whether you work in social media or any job. Our in-class book, Social Media for Strategic Communications , explains the different types of social media branding. Many companies today will look and analyze your personal social media before hiring you, and this could make or break a job offer in an instant. Keeping your personal brand clean and true to you is so important. A personal brand is going to be the first impression someone may get from you if they are meeting you in person after looking at social media. It can also deter someone away from you if you are much different in person than your online persona.  Keeping your brand consistent is important as well, consistency throughout your profiles and aligning those with how you act in real life is the key component to a successful personal brand. There are six different types of social media branding, includes altruist, careerist, early adopter, boomerang, connector, and selective.

Put the Facetune Away!

Image
Recently I read an article from Insider  written by Rachel Hosie, that talks about the dangers of photoshop in the media. The article stemmed from a social experiment done in England where a photographer photographed 15 girls from the shoulders up. He gave them each five minutes, and their only task was to make their pictures look "social media ready." The girls did not take this lightly, and each edited picture looks so different from the original. The article talks about how easily accessible photoshop tools are now that everyone has access to smartphones. Whether girls use Facetune for just editing out a blemish or alter their entire face like the girls in the experiment, it is undeniable that the girls (and guys) that we see in pictures are just not truly real anymore. The girls in this study, all edited their pictures in a similar way, that the author described as looking like a Snapchat filter. This idea comes from the look of the smaller jawline, glassy eyes

Shows, on Shows, on Shows!

Image
Concerts and shows are my favorite thing to be a part of and experience. In the last month, I had the privilege of seeing Cody Ko and Noel Miller, 4th Ave, and Spencer Sutherland. Traveling and going to shows are great experiences and I loved every moment. I will tell you a little about each show, and what they were like. The first show was on January 29 when we saw Cody Ko and Noel Miller. Cody and Noel are youtube comedians, and started on Vine. The entire tour was sold out, and our show in Columbus was crazy enough to sell out twice. A month or two before the show they had to upgrade to a bigger venue, which also ended up selling out, due to the first smaller show selling out in just five minutes. The show was at the Columbus Athenaeum, in Columbus. The show was very funny and they interacted with the crowd a lot which always makes for an interesting show. They told stories, did a live segment of "That's Cringe" which is a popular series on their channels, and at

Do You Know What You’re Posting?

Image
In chapter two of Social Media for Strategic Communication , the writers talk about how in today's society, it is so important to watch what you're posting on social media. It had some information that I was familiar with but also raised questions that I hadn't thought of before. The list of questions prompted was very thought provoking and made me want to sit and think if I've applied all of the right steps to my own account. Here are the questions and how I've applied them to my own accounts, and why it's important to consider when you're on social media: 1. Do I care if people search previous updates (pictures, messages, blog posts, etc.) to use for job interviews? From a personal standpoint, I have never really posted anything that I regret or that I wouldn't want others to see. This is something that high schools are starting to integrate more and more into their curriculum when teaching about tech and social media safety. Many schools and colleg

4 Ways to Improve Your Overall Happiness

Image
Here in Ada, it's pretty cold and dreary every day. This can really take a toll on people's mental states and well being. It's pretty common for people to feel extremely sad and even develop depression in the winter months. Most of the feelings of happiness and excitement are gone due to the lack of activities and events during the winter, you see this especially in Ada during this time of year because of the cold, snow, and ice. With a lack of social interaction and things to keep you busy, you often fall in a slump of watching Netflix by yourself in your room 24/7. In order to avoid these sad feelings, here are some tips to help you boost your happiness and confidence during these cold, sad months. 1. Surround Yourself With Supportive Friends Surrounding yourself with supportive and positive friends will boost your mood the absolute most. Your mood and personality become that of those around you so if you and your friends are constantly hyping each other up and pushing

This last Friday, Ariana Grande dropped her fifth studio album and the internet went crazy. Released in early November of 2018, the hit single  Thank U, Next broke every record possible on the charts. The video currently holding the most viewed video in 24 videos with 55 million views. This quickly lead to Ariana announcing her fifth album only months after releasing her fourth,  Sweetener , which is almost unheard of. Ariana announced the release of her album Thank U, Next , in early January and announced the release date of February 8, 2019. After the release, it took five minutes to get to number one iTunes which is the fastest album in history to do so. Every trend on Twitter worldwide was a song title from the album each with thousands of tweets, with each song in the top 20 songs on iTunes. The Art of Social Media: Recap

Image
After finishing Guy Kawasaki's,  The Art of Social Media  , I have learned quite a bit from this book regarding social media and all the different way to optimize each platform. Kawasaki introduced useful platforms that I had never heard of before, explained why they were important, and how to use them in the most effective way possible. Social media is the key to almost any successful business, event or project in today's society. It has become part of everyday life to keep clients and customers in the know of what's going on. Spreading the word about your specific purpose, whatever that may be, can be done so easily if you take steps in the right direction of how you present and post your social media. The top three things I've learned are to make your social media account presentable, use hashtags, and share! Making your social media look presentable and "pretty" could really make or break your success on social media. Having an attractive profile pictu

How to Boost Your Productivity

Image
Being productive is one of the hardest things to do when it comes to time management, and overall just getting things done. Being productive is so important in day to day life especially in work and school. It's so easy to get distracted and lose sight of your priorities, but getting back on track can reduce stress and be more organized. The most important thing you can do is keep a planner or to-do list. This will allow you to visually see all of the things you need to get and you will have an idea of how much time each thing can take. Once you have everything written down, organize it by what is most important to the least important. Doing the smaller tasks first will help you feel more productive just because psychologically you will see the list get smaller and you will feel more productive allowing you to get through more tasks. The next tip would be to put down your phone and focus. This is the hardest thing to do in my opinion, because we all constantly want to stay up
