What Social Media Brand Are You?

Creating your personal brand is so important whether you work in social media or any job. Our in-class book, Social Media for Strategic Communications, explains the different types of social media branding. Many companies today will look and analyze your personal social media before hiring you, and this could make or break a job offer in an instant. Keeping your personal brand clean and true to you is so important. A personal brand is going to be the first impression someone may get from you if they are meeting you in person after looking at social media. It can also deter someone away from you if you are much different in person than your online persona.

Keeping your brand consistent is important as well, consistency throughout your profiles and aligning those with how you act in real life is the key component to a successful personal brand. There are six different types of social media branding, includes altruist, careerist, early adopter, boomerang, connector, and selective.

The Altruis: "These individuals are committed to helping others in their community. Actions speak louder than words for these individuals, but they value relationships."

The Careerist: "These individuals focus primarily on professional advancement above their personal achievements. They are more associated with professional networks than with personal or informal ones."

The Early Adopter: "These individuals will be the first to share something with their followers and friends and are very much dedicated to being independent from others, not so much part of the collective on social media. They are dedicated to careers and relationships."

The Boomerang: "The emphasis for these individuals is to share content to generate a reaction from others—whether a positive one or a negative one. Most of the time, the reaction from audiences is more of the focus, not whether or not they really think about the subject."

The Connector: "The ultimate networkers, these individuals do virtual introductions and are highly engaged in making sure everyone in their community is united and knows each other."

The Selective: "These individuals share only relevant information to a select group of people. They are resourceful and viewed as a resource, but they are also exclusive in their networks."

When reading through these definitions, which one of these brandings relates most to you?
